Sialkot win T20 Cup for sixth time

Sialkot 180 for 6 (Qaiser Abbas 44, Shoaib Malik 43) beat Rawalpindi 170 for 8 (Naved Malik 67, Raza Hasan 2-11) by 10 runs

In a final that was tight until the last two overs, Sialkot's score of 180 proved a little too much for Rawalpindi to chase at the National Stadium in Karachi, and Sialkot won the Faysal Bank T20 Cup for the sixth time. Almost all Sialkot's top-order batsmen contributed to their imposing total. But Rawalpindi were kept alive in the chase by opener Naved Malik's 67 off 47 balls. Once Naved fell, Hammad Azam struck a couple of big blows for Rawalpindi, but Raza Hasan conceded just four runs in the 19th over, in which two wickets fell, to seal the contest Sialkot's way.
Sialkot chose to bat on a track that has produced some high scores through the tournament, and made a quick start. Imran Nazir and Shakeel Ansar looted 13 runs off Soahil Tanvir's first over, and after Nazir departed Ansar and Qaiser Abbas put together 85 for the second wicket. Rawalpindi's bowlers bowled full lengths, and Qaiser timed his drives sweetly. The pair took the score to 100 for 1 in the 12th over, but both batsmen fell in the space of five balls, to Awais Zia's part-time offspin. Both went attempting big shots: Qaiser was stumped after charging down the track and Ansar chipped in the air to deep midwicket.
That brought together Shoaib Malik and Shahid Yousuf, whose 127-run stand in the semi-finals got Sialkot past Lahore. There was to be no slowing down from Sialkot's batsmen: Yousuf hit the first three balls of Zia's next over into the off side for fours, and Malik continued the form he was in during his 88 not out against Lahore. Rawalpindi did well to concede just 10 runs off the last two overs, but 180 was still going to be a tough total to chase.
The chase got off to an explosive start, with Awais Zia smacking five fours in the first over, and two sixes in the second. Zia's innings was cut short on 32 off 13 balls, when he swept Raza Hasan to deep square leg. In a match where bowlers struggled to go for less than seven runs an over, Hasan's figures of 4-0-11-2 were outstanding. Hasan choked the runs by varying the flight and lengths of his deliveries while maintaining a tight line.
The rest of Sialkot's bowlers weren't as accurate and Naved Malik picked his moments to attack. Rawalpindi managed to stay abreast of the required-rate for most of the chase but lost wickets regularly. When Naved was caught at deep midwicket for 67, Rawalpindi needed 36 of 23 balls with five wickets remaining. In the 17th over, Hammad Azam smashed a six over long-on and lofted over extra-cover for four off consecutive balls. Nineteen were required off the last two overs, but it was Hasan that had had the final say, bowling a tight over to ensure a Sialkot win.

‘PAKISTAN TEAM SHOULD KEEP UP THE SAME MOMENTUM AGAINST SRI LANKA’

The cricket fans of the twin cities Rawalpindi and Islamabad have said Thursday that Pakistan should keep up the same momentum against Sri Lanka as they beat Kenya on February 23.Sana Khalid, a telecom company employee, said that Pakistan should beat Sri Lanka with a margin in order to build up the teams confidence and should maintain their winning streak in the mega event.

Bushra Ansari, a school teacher told APP Thursday that our team is one of the best in the world and by beating Kenya in their first match with a big margin they have proved that they are no more less dangerous as compared to the other teams.
The fans also expressed confidence of Pakistan’s chances to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup saying our team has the fire and aggression necessary to go all the way.
Imran Khan, a student in National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Islamabad, told APP that Pakistan’s chances of reaching till the semis in the World Cup is guaranteed only if they play like a unit without any grouping in the team.
“I don’t know why. It’s just a gut feeling. Our team faced so much criticism for the trio - Salman Butt, Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Aamer - and then the delay in naming the captain. I just think that this time our team will do something big in the mega  event.”
Ayaz Akhbar, a student of Foundation University, Islamabad said,”Pakistan team is an unpredictable one. It just needs unity among them and then no one can stop Pakistan from winning the World Cup.”
Rameez Hussain, a student of Allama Iqbal Open University,Islamabad said, “I believe our team can go all the way to win the mega event. Our chances are as good as that of India, Australia.
“Even if Pakistan loses to Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka, Pakistan can reach quarterfinals beating the minnows. From there onwards, it’s just three games and Pakistan team has the potential to win the three games in a row.”
Jamil Ismail, a student of Rawalpindi College of Commerce said that, “The team is going to be more controversial since the ICC verdict against the trio verdict has hurt its moral and the international media will have their eyes on them with each step they will take.”
Junaid Akram, a student of Pakistan Institute of Modern Studies (PIMS), Rawalpindi said, “As Pakistanis we surely want our country to win and we will pray for that but apart from
Pakistan, Australia is also a good team too”.
“They have won five out of six games against England. However one cannot rule out Sri Lanka and South Africa. From quarterfinals, it can be anybody’s World Cup,” he added.

INZAMAM CALLS FOR INDO-PAK SERIES IN SHARJAH

Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has welcomed the return of Sharjah Cricket Stadium as a venue for Pakistan’s upcoming home series against Sri Lanka followed by England’s tour. With foreign teams reluctant to tour Pakistan over security concerns, Inzamam described Sharjah as the next best destination away from home. “It’s a great venue and if India and Pakistan matches are held here it will be of great significance. Both the communities here are vast and people will get an opportunity to witness some great cricket. They will come in big numbers.
The ground has witnessed highest number of ODIs and this would be really great for cricket. If it starts again it will be very good,” he was quoted as saying by website emirates 247.com on Thursday.
Sharjah will host a Test match after nine years and also a one-day international during Pakistan’s series against Sri Lanka which begins next month.
Inzamam called for the regularisation of India-Pakistan series because fans of both countries are keen to see their cricketers playing againsteach other as evidenced during the turbo-charged World Cup semifinal.
“There will be strong competition and cricket will be played at a top level. It will generate interest among the youngsters and the passion will grow and the game will also improve among the teams,” he added.
“If it does not happen in the home country, they can have in a neutral venue and people will surely come where ever it is held,” he said endorsing Sharjah as the ideal neutral venue.
Talking of schedules, he blamed an overdose of cricket for the injuries to India’s players during their disastrous tour of England although acknowledging the hosts were the better team. “Earlier there were decent gaps between matches. Players were getting sufficient rest and in a year there were only six to eight Tests and 15 to 20 ODIs.
“So this gave players enough time to recover. But now the players don’t have so much of time. So when a player is injured he does not get the proper rest required and he plays and aggravates injuries,” said Inzamam.
He also felt that players found it difficult to switch gears from Tests, one-day and Twenty20 formats of the game though not finding fault with the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL). “India for the last six months have been playing only the shorter format and suddenly playing the longer version affected their temperament.
They were already under pressure and because of mounting injury list during the series it became difficult for them to win. It’s not because of IPL or anything but because of too much of cricket which increases the risk of injuries,” he said.
He also urged all-rounder Shahid Afridi to resolve his differences with the Pakistan Cricket Board and make a comeback to the sport. “He is a good player and if he comes back it’s good for the team but first the differences between him and the board have to be sorted out. It is not good when players and board fight through the media,” he said.
One-day skipper Afridi quit international cricket after being stripped of captaincy during the tour of West Indies. Coach Waqar Younis also subsequently resigned citing personal reasons.
However, Inzamam felt there was no need to appoint a foreign coach because there were so many experienced past players to choose from in Pakistan.
“I don’t think we need to search for a coach outside Pakistan. I think in Pakistan there are so many great players capable of being coach,” he said.
Inzamam said they should pick someone who has experience in all three formats of the game. “Saeed Anwar is there, Mushtaq Ahmed is coaching in England, Saqlain Mushtaq has coached in New Zealand. So we have players who have served as coaches in different countries. So the Pakistan board has to hire such players which will benefit the team,” he said.

AFRIDI TO DECIDE ON COMEBACK AFTER A MONTH

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi, who announced his retirement from international cricket soon after the World Cup to protest against the working of the Pakistan Cricket Board, says he will decide on his comeback after a month.

"There is a lot of pressure from fans and friends to come out of retirement, but I will wait for things to improve. I will take at least a month to reconsider my decision."

Pakistan will take on Sri Lanka in a full series in the United Arab Emirates, starting October 18.

Afridi, leading Karachi Dolphins in the ongoing National Twenty20 Cup, said he was not compromising on his form and fitness.

"I am training hard and focusing on improvement with both the bat as well as ball."
